Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) is facing renewed scrutiny over its leadership as the stock continues to underperform in 2025.<\/p>\n

Recent reports<\/a> suggest the titan is preparing a new product lineup for early 2026, including a budget iPhone 17e, refreshed iPads, and MacBooks, but concerns persist over slowing growth and delayed innovation \u2013 prompting some analysts to question whether CEO Tim Cook should step aside.<\/p>\n

LightShed Partners\u2019 expert Walter Piecyk, for example, argues AAPL needs a \u201cproduct-focused\u201d chief executive to navigate the AI era \u2013 warning that the company risks falling behind if it doesn\u2019t adapt its leadership strategy.<\/p>\n

Note that Apple stock is currently down more than 15% versus its year-to-date high in February.<\/p>\n

Why has Apple stock fallen out of favour?<\/h2>\n

Apple shares are struggling because of two big challenges.<\/p>\n

One, a lack of clarity on its AI strategy, Craig Moffett \u2013 the founder of MoffettNathanson \u2013 told CNBC<\/em> in an interview today, noting the giant\u2019s lag in delivering compelling on-device intelligence.<\/p>\n

Secondly, Moffett pointed to external pressures like Trump tariffs and supply chain complications in China.<\/p>\n

While Tim Cook began shifting production to India a decade ago, Moffett emphasized that \u201cthese are hard problems to solve.\u201d That said, AAPL shares<\/a> are, nonetheless, up more than 20% versus their year-to-date low at the time of writing.<\/p>\n

Is hiring a new CEO the solution for AAPL shares?<\/h2>\n

On \u201cSquawk Box<\/a><\/em>\u201d, Craig Moffett disagreed that replacing Tim Cook as the chief executive is the answer to Apple\u2019s problems \u2013 noting the company\u2019s stock price has increased 15-fold during his tenure.<\/p>\n

According to the industry expert, Cook has been \u201cextraordinarily successful\u201d \u2013 but expecting a top executive to single-handedly drive product breakthroughs is unrealistic.<\/p>\n

Moffett also hailed Cook\u2019s long-term planning, such as shifting production to India, which he said shows strategic foresight.<\/p>\n

Note that Apple shares currently pays a dividend yield of 0.49% – which, while not much, is still an additional reason to own the tech stock.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the fix for Apple Inc then?<\/h2>\n

On the same CNBC<\/em> interview, Dominic Rizzo of T. Rowe Price argued Apple\u2019s core issue is not hardware \u2013 it\u2019s AI software.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to make some fairly drastic changes on the AI side to get that upgrade cycle back,\u201d he said, pointing to elongated replacement timelines and underwhelming AI features<\/a> like Siri and on-device models.<\/p>\n

Rizzo suggests Apple consider acquisitions, such as Perplexity AI, to accelerate its capabilities. While the iPhone remains \u201cthe most important product in the world,\u201d Apple\u2019s failure to deliver compelling AI experiences has left it trailing competitors.<\/p>\n

A strategic pivot \u2013 whether through partnerships or acquisitions \u2013 may be essential to reignite investor confidence in AAPL stock and restore growth momentum, he concluded.<\/p>\n
